Create An Account
This page describes how you can create an account on Wikidot.com.

1. Create account button

If you have not yet created an account on Wikidot.com you need to use the link-button create account at the right-top of your wikidot screen. Here is what it looks like:

Login_00.jpg

2. Create account

When you click on this button-link, the "Create Account" window opens. Here you will need to fill in some important details:

Create_account_02.jpg
  • a good unique user-id (your "screen name", unique inside the wikidot.com network).
  • a valid mail-adress where the system can send the acknowledgment (this email requires a response from you for security purposes).
  • a decision on which language you prefer to use (right now, the choices are English or Polish, and all 80% translated languages from the "Translate" wiki). This choice only affects the internal pages within the wikis you create.
  • a good password for security.
  • a repeat of this good password
  • and good eyes to answer a security question to protect the wikidot system from evvvvvil robots.

Finally, you klick on the "I accept the…." link button and aggree to the Terms of Service of wikidot.com.

3. Verification of Your Email-adress !

After clicking on this "Acceptance" button You will get a verification Email to your address - PLEASE WAIT for this!
In this Email is a link to click on - You make an acknowledgement to Wikidot - that YOUR Email-Adresse belongs to your User-ID.
If you do not get this email in some 5 -10 min than check

  • if your email-address is written wrong
  • if your email-box is full
  • if the mail has landed in the spam folder
  • could be the wikidot server is overloaded and needs more time - please wait or try again later.

We know from problems with hotmail addresses - if you do not get any email please mesage us!

4. my_account

Congratulations! You now have a wikidot account. Now you should see the "your account" buttons at the right-top of the wikidot screen changes to a personal account_menu:

Login_03.jpg

An important reminder:

  • Your my account menu button leads you to your personal Account settings; it is a good idea to set up those settings right off. Just follow the link!
  • The little square box to the right of your account name ("screen name") up in the right hand corner of the screen is a pull-down/"hidden" menu where you can logout from wikidot.com: Logout from Wikidot

Edit Your Profile
**This page is outdated and replaced by en:my_account

my_account_settings-about-profil.jpg

Your profile page is what another user sees when they click on your user icon. The user profiles are stored on a separate wiki : http://profiles.wikidot.com. However, you can access and edit your profile from your Account Settings page. Here's how to do it :

1. Click on the link my account at the top of any page. This will take you to your Account Settings page.

my-account.png

2. In the left nav bar, click on the My Profile link near the bottom. This will take you to your My Profile page.

my-account-nav.png

3. Click on the Edit a page about myself link. This will take you to your User Profile page.

edit-a-page-about-myself.png

4. You can edit this page like any other wiki page. Changes to this page will be reflected on your profile. If you need to know how to edit a page, see edit-a-page.

5. Remember that your profile is user specific, not wiki specific. That means that no matter how many wikis you have, your user profile will stay the same. Try to keep your profile information generalized so matter what wiki a person is on when they look at your profile, it will make sense! Unless of course you only have one wiki and that is all you ever plan to have (not likely, because as we've said before, wikidot is addictive!).

Find A Page
[[include include:languages pagename=find-a-page]]

You have some ways to find a page in a site:

1. Search for any text

On the right top of your wikidot page you will find the search box where you can enter any text to search in the site (forum and/or pages). If the site uses a custom "theme" different to the used one in the community then you will find this "search box" perhaps on another location.

You will get a list of all pages (and/or forum threads) with such text in its content.

2. Module Pages used

If it is present you can use the menu point "List all pages" to show all pages in the site.

Or if not possible You can create ( or edit) any page to include following module-line(s):

[[module Pages preview="true" details="true" category="en" ]]

Notes:
Category="en" for the English pages of this wiki. Omitting a category is equivalent to category="_default" for the "standard" pages (there are other categories available on the site manager/permissions menu) ;
preview=true includes the first lines of the text;
details=true includes the last Editor, revision number and update date/time.

You will get some lists like this one (real time , means the list is from now, this moment !):

The ListPages module does not work recursively.

Forum Option Buttons
[[include include:languages pagename=forum-option-buttons]]

Copied partially from howto:How to Use Option Buttons [http://community.wikidot.com/howto:how-to-use:forum-option-buttons]

Or to be more precise, what they do!

Forums Post option buttons

Below any post you make, there are two buttons: reply | options

Reply

Use this to directly reply to the specific post you are reading. It gives you an "edit" box with the post title automatically inserted. You may change this title if you like. Finally, there is a button called:

Options

This gives you three more buttons: permanent link| edit | delete

Permanent link
You may find this useful if you wish to link to a particular post in the forum. When you click on the button, a little extra window opens containing the URL for the particular reply/post, which is the post's permanent link. Please note that this is often not the URL in the address bar of your browser! You can copy and paste to put this link in any of your wiki pages (just as you can any others). Remember that if the post is deleted then the link becomes inoperable.

Example

[*http://community.wikidot.com/forum/t-9857/permanent-link#post-24328 Example]

Edit
Use this button if you wish to edit your post after you have posted it, brings up the standard edit dialog box.
Delete
Use With Caution ! Read the warning.

Thread Buttons.

Under the "thread" summary box, you will find three buttons.

unfold all: Will expand folded posts

fold: Will collapse unfolded posts

+ more options Clicking this will give you

Edit title and Description.

Allows you to change the Thread Title and summary

Stickness

Will keep or promote important "threads" at the top of the "tree" in a forum category. example

Posting block

Enables admins and Mods to "lock" a Thread. Only they will be able to make additional posts.

Move thread

This option gives you the opportunity to move the thread to a different Forum Category.
It can be dangerous to delete threads, it is far better to move them to a "hidden" category instead.
It is also particularly useful for removing spam

add to watched
If you wish to keep track of posts in a particular thread, use this option.
To view the watched posts go to "my account" » watched »discussions

Introduction to Divs
[[include include:languages pagename=introduction-to-divs]]

A div is an HTML element. That's the technical definition. For the average person, a div is a box that you can use to create advanced page layouts (in theory).

The Box

The div creates a box that you can apply inline CSS to. To show the box, here's a div with a border :

[[div style="border:1px solid #000;width:100px;height:100px;"]]
box
[[/div]]

This code will create :

Join a Wiki
[[include include:languages pagename=join-a-wiki]]

Members of a wiki-site can have more rights than anonymous or registered users on wikidot. This depends on the setup of the permissions in the Site manager.

There are four ways to join a Wikidot wiki. (Note, if you start a wiki, you are already the admin of that wiki). By application, by password, by being invited, or by using the Join button. Before you can join any wikidot wiki, you first must have joined wikidot itself and have a wikidot account.

By Invitation

If you know the person who owns the wiki, they may invite you. If this happens, you will receive a notification that pops up on the next wikidot page you load. To accept the invitation, simply press the "Accept Invitation" button.

There is a link-button right from this "accept invitation" where you can refuse this invitation. I had never such an experience but technically this is possible.

This invitation is possible over e-mail too, if you have never heard from wikidot and the inviting site. Then you have to follow the link in the e-mail and (in most cases) have to create an account.

By Application

On the page "Join this site" or sometimes on the welcome page their is the posssibility to apply for admission - if the admins have allowed this. In this case you should have an account on wikidot (if you are an anonymous than the "Join this site" screen changes to the "Login/ Create an account" ) and type in a short text with your applyment for admission. Do not forget to click on the Apply-Button!

By Password

An admin can install a "general" password in the Site manager / members / policy page and allow the use of it. If you got such password (by mail or private message) you have the allowance to join the site as a member and can type this pasword here to get the entrance. Once you are a member of a site you will not need this password again to join.

Join Button

If the wiki administrator has set their site's access policy to be 'open' and has added a Join button to one of their pages, you can click this button and instantly become a member.

If you are not logged into a Wikidot account, it will even take you through the steps of creating one! :)

Link to a Wiki Page
[[include include:languages pagename=link-to-a-wiki-page]]

To link to a wiki page on your website, use three brackets on each side of the url of the page you want to link to :

[[[link]]]

This results in link.

Depending on what "theme" you have used for your wikidot site, the links are coloured to denote if the page you have linked to exists or not. As an example: Using this "theme" (Flannel Ocean) :

If the page already exists, it will be blue after you save the page. If the page does not already exist, it will be gray after you save the page.

In the case that the page does not exist, if you click on the link you will be taken to a page where you can create it. See start-a-new-page.

More information can be found in the "official" Wiki Syntax Documentation and in our handbook: Links.

Login At Wikidot
[[include include:languages pagename=login-at-wikidot]]

This page descibes how you can login to the overall wikidot community site. (Note that other individual wiki sites hosted on wikidot may require you to be logged in to collaborate or read. The process to login is the same, but depending on how the owner of that wiki has configured their site, you may not have permissions to do so on their wiki site.)

1. Login button

You will find a login button on the top right of your browser screen:

Login_00.jpg

2. Create account

If you don't have an account on wikidot.com, you should click Create_account and follow the instructions to create an account. For this you will need:

  • a unique user id (unique inside the wikidot.com network) and
  • a valid email address where the system can send you acknowledgement emails.

3. Sign_on

Once you have created an account on wikidot.com, you can login to the overall wikidot community site. You will need to enter your email address and password:

Login_01.jpg

Notes for the checkboxes:

Sign me out… — The system make automatically a signout if you make login from another IP adress.

4. My Account

After you login, you will see your personal account menu at the top right of your screen:

Login_03.jpg

  • From here you can select my account which will take you to your personal account settings.
  • The dropdown menu (which you can access by clicking the arrow) will allow you to log out.

If this is your first login, you may want to edit your profile on my_account. This is optional.

This document explains how to logout / logoff from Wikidot.com and shows a little short-hand menu hidden at a little icon right from your "my_account" link at the top right side of the page.

If You are logged in with Your User Id You will find at the top right side (right from the page link "my_acount") a little icon (normally a little DownArrow, but in Internet Explorer 7 it is a little button);
MyAccountDownArrow_gd.jpgif You click on this icon a small pull-down menu will open with some short-hand and at the end the "logout" link:
MyAccountDownArrowExpanded_gd.jpg

If You want You can logoff / logout with this link and can leave the WIKIDOT.page.listeners ….

I for my own have not seen this little menu-icon for a long time - and made no logout therefore.. :)

Page Option Buttons
[[include include:languages pagename=page-option-buttons]]

Partially copied from: How to use Option Buttons

Page Options.

These buttons are found at the bottom of every page.

The first set is: Edit | Tags | History | Files | Print | Site tools |+ Options

Edit
Opens up the standard "edit " window. Use this to edit your page. Please note that when entering code of any sort, it is essential that spaces are inserted in the correct place, otherwise the page will not display as required. Using a "CTRL + e" shortcut instead of the button does the same thing.
Tags
Use this to enter "tags" (keywords referring to the content of your pages).
History
Use this to view the changes over a period of time to your page. There are a number of options and actions that can be carried out to aid you in tracking changes. See also the Glossary entry "History"!
Files
If you click this button, a little extra menu opens with more buttons (upload new file | file manager), which gives you the opportunity to up/download files to the page (also called "attaching" them to the page), and view & control files within that page. The file manager gives you an overview of the used space too.
Print
Will open up your page in a new window, allowing you to print the contents of that page without any of the stuff (sidebars, navigation features, etc.) surrounding that page.
Note1: if you used coding to insert columns, the layout is preserved.
Note2: if your printout is not in a good layout with the automatic page-breaks, then you can use ( or avoid) page-breaks. See the comments on Print friendly option.
Give it a try and click on the "print" button to test different pt-values and layouts:
Site Tools
Gives you two further options:
  • wanted Pages:

Will give you the names of the pages that have NOT been created yet, but that has been "suggested" somewhere in the wiki by someone inserting a non-existent (internal) link on a page.

  • orphaned pages

This is a list of all the pages that do not have links to or from. There will always be some in here, such as Category, Forum threads, New Forum Thread, etc.

  • draft pages

This is a list of all saved "draft"-version of pages.

+Options:

This opens up a new list of buttons.
Edit Sections | Append | Edit Meta | Watchers | Backlinks |Page Source |Parent | Lock Page| Rename | Delete

Edit sections.
Clicking on this will provide you with an "edit" button next to each separate heading on your page. Clicking a particular "edit" button will open (and lock) that part of the page only. Very handy for editing long documents.
Append.
This gives you an empty edit box. Any text that is entered here will be appended to the bottom of the page. Note: if, for example, you have used the "comments" module, the the appended text will appear BELOW it.
Edit Meta.
This gives you a new edit box. You can enter "meta" data to be inserted into the head /head section of (all) pages.
Watchers.
Who watches this page? This gives you a list of those people who will receive notifications when changes are made to this page or the page is commented.
Backlinks
Will give a list of pages that link to this page or directly include it.
Page source
Will give you all the text and coding used for the page in such a way that it can be copied and pasted elsewhere. For larger pages it can also help in locating errors in the text/code because you get it displayed in the format at the same time as you view it (unlike the edit window).
Parent
Use this to help in-page navigation. You might find it a good idea to put at least Home page name in here This is VERY handy if you wish to use "bread crumbs" navigation. Put [[module PageTree]] in your "home" page somewhere and all will be revealed. More info Here
Lock Page
Will give you a tick box. Tick this if you only want admins and mods to be able to edit the page. This is sometimes useful, for example, on the starting page. It is over and above the permissions set in "site manager"
Rename
Warning! This will change the actual address of the page. If you change it, any pages that have links to and from it will not work. Fortunately there is another button Show dependences that warns you if this is the case. Alternatively, just change the displayed Title of the Page in the Title of page text box above the edit dialog box which will not change the actual address.
Delete
You can delete the page by either moving it to a default "deleted" category (the page name will be changed to "deleted:page_name") or by permanently removing it from the Wiki, which is nonrecoverable and should be used with caution.

Page Title - How to edit?
[[include include:languages pagename=page-title]]

A page's title can be edited by editing the page. When you click on the edit link, you will see a text box labeled "Title of the page:".

For example, if you try it on this page, you will see that this page is titled Page Title - How to edit?

wikidot_edit_page_ttitles_01.jpg

Titles vs. Names

A page's name is not necessarily the same as its title. On the creation of a page (either via the "Add a new page" box or from an open link in a page) the title will default to the page's name, but it can be modified at any time.

Though a page's title can be changed, you should take care not to confuse the reader by giving it a title that is completely different from the page's name.

Pages without a Title

It is possible to have a page without a title; you do this by leaving the 'Title of the page:' box blank in the edit view.

However, keep in mind that if you do this, your reader may have a hard time determining the name of the page, in particular, if the address bar of the browser is hidden.

Breadcrumbs

If parenting is used, the page's title will be used in the breadcrumbs. If a page does not have a title, its name will be used instead. (Parent settings are controlled by the +option button.)

Start a New Page
[[include include:languages pagename=start-a-new-page]]

There are three ways to start a new page.

1. Use the Add a New Page Box

In every default theme, there is a box labeled Add a new page in the left sidebar. Type in the name of the page you want to create and click the button marked new page. You will be taken to the page editor. Type in something and then click save at the bottom of the page editor.

2. Click on a Link

Click on a link leading to an uncreated page - like this one. You will be taken to the uncreated page. Click on the link that says create this page and you will be taken to the page editor. Type in something and then click save at the bottom of the page editor.

3. Edit the Url (Advanced Skill)

In the url box of your browser, edit the url so that it leads to an uncreated page. Then proceed as usual.

Some Notes

The name of the page that you type into the Add a new page box is the url of the page, not necessarily the title. The url and the page title are independent. For more information see : Page title.

TODO: add something on the choose template dialog which appears directly at the creation of the new page

The Editor
[[include include:languages pagename=edit-a-page]]

There are 3 modes of editing a page:

1. Whole page edit

This mode locks the whole page for you during the editing time. If the page isn't long, this won't be a problem.

At the bottom of each page you will find some buttons. The left-most of these is a button named edit, which starts the "Edit the page" frame.

wikidot_edit_button_01.jpg

A click on this button opens a new page consisting of the "old" content of the page and a new section titled "Edit the page" (or use the typical "CTRL + e" shortcut for the same effect):

wikidot_Edit_the_page_01a.jpg

This frame contains an editor window for you to enter new text. Above you will see some formatting buttons (sometimes with wizards). Hovering your mouse cursor over the buttons will cause a "tool-tip" to appear describing the formatting button's function.

Under the editor-window there are 2 help links inserted. These will display the help information in an new window:

wikidot_Edit_the_page_02.jpg

Below that is the "Short description of changes:" text box for providing a description of the entry or changes you made. This description is very helpful, for instance, when you view the "Recent changes" page.

wikidot_Edit_the_page_03.jpg

On the right side of this short description window is the Lock information shown:

wikidot_Edit_the_page_02b.jpg

If the edit-window is too big for your screen, there is a "+" and "-" button (on the bottom) to increase or decrease the edit-window's size respectively.

wikidot_Edit_the_page_02a.jpg

Also at the bottom of the edit-window are buttons to save or discard your work:

wikidot_Edit_the_page_04.jpg

  • cancel is clear - you will lose all Your work without any security question. The same happens if You press too much the "Escape" button on Your keyboard( in panic or so).
  • view diff - this is helpful to control Your last changes in a little extra - frame before you save the changes (with an included example); to close this frame "Diff changes" click on the little button "close diff view":

:

wikidot_Diff_changes_01.jpg

wikidot_Diff_changes_02.jpg

  • preview - a good idea to have a look before you press any save button.
  • save & continue - this saves your work and you can continue without going to the edit buttons again.
  • save - this saves your work and the page is re-sent to your browser with the new content(or use the typical "CTRL + s" for the same effect).

2. Section edit

This mode will only lock a single section (defined by the header selected) instead of the whole page during the editing time.
This is useful if the page is long and you don't want to prevent other authors from writing to its other sections at the same time.

To enable this mode you have to switch the "+options" button (bottom -right side)

wikidot_plus_options_button_01.jpg to "-options": wikidot_-options_button_01.jpgYou have got the extra buttons line with the left most button "edit_sections" : wikidot_edit_sections_button_01.jpg

If you click on this button, every header section (the line with the "+" or "++") in your page (normally down to level 2) will get an edit button on the right side:

wikidot_edit_sections_Link_01.jpg

You can use this button to edit the selected section alone without disturbing or changing the rest of the page. Note that this button is check-able, for setting the section edit as allowed or not. Also, at the moment you save or discard your change, the extra button line (which was displayed via clicking the "+options" button) will again be hidden. Note that in future releases this may change.

The only difference between the editor-window and the whole page edit mode is:
the button save & continue is not present…

3. Append

In this mode you can only append text to the whole page content:

You will find the button to do this in the "+options" :

wikidot_plus_options_button_01.jpg

there is the second button in the extra buttons line:

wikidot_Append_button_01.jpg

The editor-window "Edit the page" opens as usual - but you don't have a "view diff" button or a "save & continue" button.

Some notes

When you use one of the save-buttons: please wait for the acknowledgment ( "page saved") - otherwise you will lose the changes!

If the page "hangs" with a running cursor - try the save button again. Sometimes this helps.

As of the changes of 2007-07-26, the "CTRL+e" and "CTRL+s" shortcuts do the same thing as the "edit" and "save" buttons, respectively.
